How did you come up with the 3/100 Head?
Whenever we set out to find a great tone, what we are trying to replicate is a sound we have heard on record or heard live. Whether the reference point is Steve Vai, Robben Ford, Toto or Linkin Park, we try first of all to reproduce the sound we have heard, and then personalize it to make it our own. This is essentially what the 3/100 Head does, providing guitarists with those sounds they have heard on record or live, then allowing them to customize tone using a wide range of tools.
How can I get the sound I'm after?
By listening to other guitarists and using equipment that has what it takes to replicate the sounds you hear. The 3/100 Head has been designed around the concept of tone customization - just plug in, listen to the different sounds of the three channels and you are sure to find the basic tone you want to then work with to create your own tone. In quality terms, the 3/100 Head compares favorably to the best US-made boutique amps, yet comes in at around half the price.
How do you manage to keep the price so low?
Because we build our amps in Italy through a joint venture with Bologna-based TBE Srl, the company the actually builds the amps. By leveraging TBE's experience in the electronics industry, we have developed economies of scale that make our amps exceptionally competitive on a price/quality ratio.
What new, original features does the 3/100 Head offer?
The 3/100 Head offers an array of unique features, first among which is the boost control for solos. The amp features two master volume controls, one for rhythm and one for solo, so the guitarist is free to choose from a total of 3 channels and 6 volume settings. The real bonus here is that the solo function boosts the ouput level and the gain at the same time. This is important in that, when soloing, guitarists want to achieve a sound that has higher levels of gain and sustain than those used during rhythm parts.
Another brand-new feature of the 3/100 Head is the possibility to use effects, such as delays and reverbs from a digital signal processor and to then match them to each channel and to the 'solo' function using the supplied foot-switch, without
recourse to a separate MIDI pedal board.
In practice, it's just like having a digital signal processor incorporated in a valve amp. Last but not least, for those who want to emulate the sounds of rock and metal, the lead channel includes a 'shaping' function that can be pre-set, allowing you to switch instantly between a distorted rhythm part scooped on midrange tones, to a solo that is flat in the midrange, thus providing more notes definition. All of this has been designed in the name of maximum flexibility and ease of use.
What do you mean exactly by 'flexibility and ease of use'?
For instance: the front panel - your starting point in the creation of your own tone - features bass, mid, treble and presence controls for each channel and just two switches. One switch provides the crunch channel with two different sounds, while other supplies two different sounds to the lead channel, meaning that the guitarist can precisely alter the sound in next-to-no-time.
How would you describe the sound of the 3/100 Head?
As I said before, most guitarists are basically looking for a choice of between 3 and 5 different sounds, including: a warm, dynamic, sparkling clear tone that stays clean even at high volumes settings; a crunch channel that can switch between a vintage tweed tone to a hard british overdrive and a powerful, creamy, rich lead channel, full of sustain for those times when you really want to rock out, since this channel is capable of producing a truly devastating metal roar. This is what the 3/100 Head is all about - switch it on and prepare to be blown away.
Who is this amp aimed at?
Cover bands and session players will certainly get a lot out of it, as will anyone who needs a truly ultra-versatile amp that's simple and easy to use. Metalheads will have trouble resisting the pulverising tones of the lead channel.
What else can you tell us about this amp?
Well, it has two supports, making it easy to locate in a rack between the amp and the cabinet. It also sports a 'Half Power' switch that allows you to reduce power levels by up to 50% for when you're playing in small clubs or in studios but want the same dynamics you would get at 120W. Moreover, the cabinet has been specially designed for string players, and every amp comes complete with
a DVD that gives you the lowdown on all the functions and has a load of fascinating tips on how to make the most of the special effects and how to shape your sound.
